My first advice to you?
DON’T DO IT! But, if….
You really want to impress her then:
Here are 3 tips:
Remember that you have a special relationship that is more important than golf.
There are other golfers on the golf course and you will be trying to stay out of their way.
Patience is GOLDEN.
Trouble With Your Gal’s 1st Golf Efforts
Your gal takes 5 swings on the tee just to hit the ball. The next 2 groups are watching and “waaaaaaaayytiiiinnnngggg”. You are sinking into the grass. Your “lesson” is already over but you are going to endanger your relationship by finishing the round. If she doesn’t walk off the course after hole #4, she will quit playing and most likely wants to go home early.
When she does hit the ball off the tee it goes 20 yards into tall, grundgy rough. You remember, from somewhere, golfers are to play the ball from where it lands. No, No, NO! Don’t make her do that! Too late! You do.
Later, after you let a group play through and watch the assistant Pro drive by looking at you out of the corner of her eye, you arrive at the green. Whew! OK, honey. Nice and eeeeasy (as you watch the putt role off the back of the green.)
Five putts later her ball lands in the hole. You both stop at the side of the green and count all the strokes your gal took to get to the green. Hmmm! 1, 2, …. 5, 6, …. 10, 11, we don’t count the ball that went sideways.
25 minutes to do the first hole of 320 yards. Let’s see. This looks like an average of 30 minutes a hole for 9 holes. 4 1/2 hours. Guy, this is not going to work.
But, what does work?
How To Help Your Gal Enjoy And Learn Some Golf Skill
You hit your drive. Since you better not keep score on this round use a 5-iron.
Your gal should have had a few practice swings while waiting at the tee. She is to set up to the ball and swing at it. Three swings. Wherever the ball is pick it up and drop it by your ball. The 2 waiting groups will be happy.
There are no rules of golf in play for this round. You are guiding your gal in her first visit around a golf course. She gets to play some hits from your ball locations. She gets to see your enjoyment of the game.
On a Par 4 hole allow her to play her ball from no more than 3 positions. Try one chip. If it goes 40 yards over the green then drop a ball on the green for her to putt.
The reason why a couple likes the above tip the most is that the gal does not get tired from a lot of swings on each fairway. A beginner to golf does not have “golf swing” muscles. She will be very tired after the 4th hole and will have some fairly sore muscles tomorrow. She will not be happy.
Now here is a huge tip. She or you are not to take more than 3 putts. If the ball is not in the hole then pick it up and make haste to the next tee. Get out of the way of the group behind. You can talk about the hole at the safety of the next tee.
The reason you pick the ball up after the 3rd putt? In casual play after the 3rd putt most golfers just tap away at the ball. This wastes time. And, I have seen golfers from the group behind hit onto the green when they see someone listlessly putting from one side of the hole to the other. Verrrry dangerous.
By the way, this could happen if you are an experienced lady golfer teaching your guy how to golf.
When working at a golf course I would chat with a couple and offer these or similar tips. They played a round in good time and really appreciated my observations.
I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic. Correct me if you like but be nice, please.
